A short guide about Puerto Rico

Following Columbus’ second voyage to the Americas - the island of Puerto Rico was claimed by the Spanish Crown in 1498. The Island was populated for centuries by aboriginal people, but in 1898 African slave labor was introduced, as after 400 years of colonial rule the indigenous population was nearly exterminated. As a result of the Spanish-American War, Puerto Rico was ceded and became a territory of the USA. Puerto Ricans were granted US citizenship in 1917, but the spirit of the Puerto Rico is still very independent.

One of Puerto Rico's most famous beaches is Luquillo Beach. It is located on the island's Northeast coast and is considered to be one of the world's best beaches, with lots of music and dancing, the locals love to have tourists and foreigners join in. On the west side of the beach you will find the "Luquillo Kiosks" they are popular eateries among the local population and a few dollars buys you a full authentic Puerto Rican meal.

The travel hot spot of the island is the capital of San Juan, a modern city with ancient roots and lots of sights that date back hundreds of years. The rest of the island offers many beautiful places, great hiking opportunities and old colonial plazas. The Balloon festival is held in March and celebrated with a hot air balloon ride; other places of interest include Ponce and the Parque of El yunque.
