A short guide about Valley of the Mushrooms
Creel was historically a logging town, but over the last 20 years, tourism has become the primary job source - as there are quaint hotels and restaurants with tours into the Sierra Tarahumara Range and canyons.
Near Creel take a self-drive tour through the Valley of the Mushrooms, also known as the Valley of the Frogs or the Valley of the Penis’ with its strange monolithic formations. These Mushrooms aren't the type you eat, but the type you stand under, if you’re not vertically challenged - you can reach up and push the "mushroom cap" stone with your hand. Many of the stone caps weigh over two tons and it can be quite a thrill to be moving something so heavy with just one hand.
See the Cave Dwellings of the Tarahumara Indians, famed for their colourful tribal customs and prowess as long-distance runners. Make time for a special visit to the local kindergarten and elementary school - where you will learn more about the children and their culture in this remote area of the world. When you have finished exploring this quaint town and local wares, be sure to savour the sunset - as it colours the canyon walls, leaving you with some remarkable memories and photos.
Tourabout has a range of holiday packages to explore the Copper Canyon National Park - home to the Tarahumara (Raramuri) Indians. So have a little look at our supplier’s tours - maybe visit the stone monolith – the Pena del Gigante, found in front of the Cascada de Piedra Volada, the bottom lower part of the canyon provides some spectacular views and from this angle it appears as a great pyramid of impressive stone.
