A short guide about Tortuguero National Park
Costa Rica is the perfect family holiday paradise with activities galore to keep everyone entertained. From secluded white sandy beaches with great surf and amazing scuba diving, to active volcanoes and towering rain forests. Nestled in a fertile valley among coffee and sugar-cane farms on a high plateau is Costa Rica’s capital city - San Jose. Spend some free time relaxing with some sightseeing; there is the National Theatre, built in 1897 and the Gold, Jade and National Museums are also particularly recommended for a visit.
But it is the Tortuguero National Park that is your prize tour... Leave San Jose by bus to visit the lush surrounds of the Tortuguero National Park - located on the Atlantic and Caribbean coast.
Your journey starts by bus to the port of Limon, then take a taxis, and then a motorised boat along the inland jungle canals into the park. As the park has such a wide variety of wildlife along its banks, you may possibly spot monkeys, sloths, crocodiles, turtles, many different birds and the ‘Jesus Lizard' - so named because it can walk on water!!
While in the Tortuguero National Park – if you’re lucky, you may get to observe the Green Turtles who, between August and October, arrive at the beaches in their thousands to lay eggs in the sand. There is an interesting visitor's centre in the tiny village where you can watch videos and learn all about the turtles. During your excursion around the Tortuguero National Park you will also be able to see the tiny but brightly coloured poison arrow frogs.
Tourabout has a number of partners with tours and holidays visiting Costa Rica and the Tortuguero National Park - with its many attractions such as the Turtle Walk. Available tours range from bird watching, hiking and rafting - and all only a few hours from Monteverde Cloud Forest - where you can swing through the treetops on a canopy zipline.
