A short guide about The Pyramids

The Pyramids really do have to be seen to be believed and it’s a journey out into the suburbs, after weaving your way through the manic Cairo traffic. Suddenly, there they are: huge majestic tombs rising out of the desert, towering above the modern city of Cairo. Built over five thousand years ago, the Pyramids are the only one of the seven wonders of the ancient world that is still standing.

These most enduring symbols of the Ancient Egyptian civilization were built during the period of the Old and Middle Kingdom on the West Bank of the Nile. The oldest and largest of the three pyramids in the Giza Necropolis (bordering what is now Cairo), is the Great Pyramid of Giza. The pyramid was built as a tomb for the Fourth dynasty Egyptian pharaoh Khufu, and after taking 20 years to construct, it was finished around 2560 BC.

There are other pyramids to the south of Egypt and in Saqqara you will find the oldest (step) pyramid, but for over 3,800 years the Great Pyramid of Giza was the tallest man-made structure in the world. All that remains of it is the underlying step-pyramid core structure seen today. Many of the casing stones that once covered the structure can still be seen around the base of the Great Pyramid. As you prepare to explore the Pyramids and contemplate the mysterious temples and tombs built for the Pharaohs, there will be self appointed guides and camel drivers waiting for you, to talk you into a guided visit, but this is hardly necessary.

The scientific and alternative theories regarding the Great Pyramid's construction techniques, have left many mysteries surrounding the creation of these pyramids, were they built by aliens or are they aligned to the stars? Tourabout has many travel packages to Egypt that include enlightening tours of the Pyramids, with a professional guide to help unravel their mysteries.
