Today the Okavango River has no outlet to the sea; so instead, it empties onto the sands of the Kalahari Desert. The sand aquifers of numerous delta islands creates evaporation and transpiration, providing unusually pure water to enter the delta, by leaving enormous quantities of salt behind.
