A short guide about Active travel to Okavango Delta

Visit one of the largest inland deltas in the world – the Okavango Delta (or Okavango Swamp) offers great scenic beauty, while it sustains phenomenal numbers of wildlife. The crocodile, hippo, water bucks and various fish species are among the many wild animals that can be viewed from safari vans and boats.

The Okavango Delta was once part of an ancient lake that dried up some 10,000 years ago – Lake Makgadikgadi existed in what is now the Kalahari Desert in Botswana, and once upon a time the Okavango, Zambezi, and Cuando rivers all emptied into the lake. Today the Okavango River has no outlet to the sea; so instead, it empties onto the sands of the Kalahari Desert. The sand aquifers of numerous delta islands creates evaporation and transpiration, providing unusually pure water to enter the delta, by leaving enormous quantities of salt behind.

Home to magnificent wildlife, the Okavango Delta attracts thousands of visitors every year and there are quite a number of first class lodges and safari camp sites where visitors touring the area can be accommodated. The meeting of dry land and the Delta is a breath-taking contrast, and is popularly referred to as the 'Jewel of the Kalahari'.

Tourabout has quite a range of safari tours to the Okavango Delta – With forests of palms, grasslands, islands, flood plains and lagoons to be seen, tourists seeking the pleasure of an adventure are sure to have one of the best experiences of their life. The delta provides a seasonal habitat to numerous different species and is well represented for Bird-watching tours with over 400 species of birds, all being fed by the delta waters that spill into the sands of the Kalahari Gemsbok National Park.
